Asia-US West Coast spot rate eclipses U$ 4,000 per feu

Spot rates from Asia to US West Coast quoted by some carriers surged above U$ 4,000 per feu in the Week 39 as shipping lines leveraged the pricing power they have achieved through consolidation, as well as their success in managing capacity, according to Drewry. They added that based upon the carriers’ success in implementing general rate increases in the past four months, the 2021-2022 service contract in next May would be more than U$ 600 per feu (as per Journal of Commerce survey) higher than the current service contract rates.

Cyber-attack cripples CMA CGM website

CMA CGM is fighting off a ransomware cyber-attack and has cut all external access to its applications to prevent the malware from spreading, the carrier said in a statement on 28 September. The attack appears to have affected several of CMA CGM’s offices in China, although the carrier said its network remains available for booking and operation requests from customers. However, its website is unavailable.

EU’s plan to include shipping in Emission Trading System faces industry backlash

The European Parliament has voted in favor of a proposal to include shipping in the Europe Emission Trading System and to impose a 2030 40% carbon intensity target on ships of 5,000 gross registered tons and above. It is strongly opposed by the shipping sector that argues its GHG emissions regulations should be seen from a global perspective and handled by the IMO.

The World Shipping Council (WSC), The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) have joined together in lambasting the decision by the European Parliament.

First deep-sea LNG containerships prepare for service

The first deep-sea container services using ships fueled by LNG are due to begin later September. CMA CGM’s 14,812 teu CMA CGM Tenere and 23,112 teu CMA CGM Jacques Saadé will join Ocean Alliance’s NEU4 service and will be followed by another eight 23,000 teu units and eleven 15,000 teu ships, according to Alphaliner. The 23,000 teu ships will supply LNG once per voyage on a 12-week round trip at Rotterdam. The 15,000 teu ships, which are on charter from Eastern Pacific Shipping, are expected to be deployed on the Asia-Mediterranean trade lane, with bunkering taking place in Fos-sur-Mer.

Dual fuel hydrogen-powered engine and future of green ammonia

CMB, the Belgian shipping company, has launched a dual-fuel engine that can cut carbon emissions by 85% when running on hydrogen. The chief executive of CMB said the diesel-hydrogen engine represents the use of an existing technology combined with the adoption of a new fuel in hydrogen and supported by the necessary engineering. The engine’s capacity is 1 MW but based on the technology, larger engines of up to 10 MW can also be developed.

He added that the green ammonia is going to be the way forward to power very large engines on top of large container ships and large bulkers.
